That is a phrase that is ingrained in us from a very early age: but is it the best way to be?
What if we instilled the mindset, ‘Be ready for an Opportunity?’
When Leadership knocks are you ready to answer? Maybe in the past you have knocked on Leadership’s door because you were ready to engage? On many occasions when we are ready, Leadership is not at home when we call.
When Leadership calls you, you have to be confident that Leadership is knocking on the correct door. But, how do you prepare?
Is learning Leadership Skills without being a Leader the same as learning how to swim by balancing on a stool in your kitchen? Surely you have to be in the water to actually swim? What’s more, you could simply drown because you have a wealth of theory but no experience.
Experience of Leadership is key. But, to be an effective leader we need more than just the experience of leading, we need abilities, skills and attitudes of Leadership that we can acquire from others. Strategies, techniques and skills can be taught or gleaned from books.
I got my first taste of being a Leader through accident and fear. Accident: I was in the right place at the right time when the position became available. Fear: everyone else was too scared or not ready to take the role on. I was ready.
I was confident, I believed in myself, I was hungry for advancement, I wanted to put my knowledge into practice.
My knowledge was gained through reading about Leadership and talking and listening to Leaders and asking questions.
How did you prepare for Leadership?
